The Coaching Process
It is important to note that coaching is very individual and changes according to the needs of the person being coached. A typical coaching process is described below.
Sessions vary from 60 to 90 minutes and usually take place every 2 weeks. We prefer our clients to initially sign up for 12 sessions, as this provides enough time for meaningful change. Some clients choose to schedule further sessions depending on what the coaching objectives are.
We request mid-way and end of session reviews to be completed by our clients so that we can ensure the coaching is on track and the client's needs are being accommodated.
We recommend that the coaching sessions take place at one of our venues in Bryanston which have been carefully selected to provide the right space for coaching. It is often in the client's best interests to work away from the office. We are, however, flexible and will travel to the client if requested, provided travelling costs are covered.
The first session
The first session is an intake discussion where we will gather information about you and what you want to achieve through coaching. The context of your life, where you have come from and your current set of commitments is relevant to the coaching process. In the first session we will also agree on the coaching contract which includes the process we plan to use, logistics and responsibilities. This is where we set the scene and manage expectations. This also includes a discussion on how action plans are to be documented and monitored.
We may ask you to complete two documents either before this first session or directly afterwards. One is personal details and the other is a questionnaire to get you thinking about what you want. At the end of the session, as with all sessions, we will agree on something you need to do before the next session. This can take the form of a self observation or a practice. In order for coaching to result in meaningful change, work is required!
Subsequent sessions
This is where the real coaching work happens. We will work on refining and clarifying what you want to achieve, and then implement action plans to achieve this. The sessions can include but are not limited to the following:
- exploring values
- working on self-limiting beliefs
- finding clarity around decisions that need to be made
- visualization
- other coaching tools
As with the first session, you will be required to take some action in between sessions.
Final Session
The coaching process is reviewed, and outstanding requirements are identified. We will jointly decide if more coaching is required, and, if so, what the objective for subsequent sessions would be.
